Iceland 2009

Visiting Iceland in May has its trade-offs: few tourists and bad weather. We brought our own car with a ferry to Iceland and drove on highway 1 around the island. First major stop was Lake Mývatn and Húsavík with its geothermal fields, Iceland horse riding and whale watching. From the capital Reykjavík, we completed the "Golden Circle", - Thingvellir National Park, Geysir and Gullfoss. Of course, we took a bath at the Blue Lagoon, - at freezing air temperatures. Our insider tip is to visit the Raufarhólshellir Cave. You will find there glittering stalagmites made from ice. We then continued on highway 1 via Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Cape Dyrhólaey to our third major stop, the Skaftafell National Park. Hiking in front of and on glaciers is the main attraction here. At the nearby Jökulsárlón lake, we made a boat tour among glacier ice blocks. The ferry stopped on its way back for a view hours at Tórshavn on the Faroe Islands.
