This one-week trip at the German-Czech border region had a lot of facets: alive and dead nature, German cities outside Germany, wellness a la 19th century and a world-class opera event. We started at the Bavarian Forest and visited the Lusen National Park Center. Its main attraction are a tree top walk with a 44m high dome and its wildlife enclosures. Hiking to the Lusen peak led us through a forest destroyed by a bark beetle infestation, where new live slowly comes back. We visited for a day the historic town of Ceský Krumlov (formerly Krummau). Then we continued to the historic spa town of Karlovy Vary (formerly Karlsbad) for a few days of wellness and sightseeing. The top attraction, though, was at the end: the Bayreuth Festival with seeing a performance of Wagner's Tannhäuser
